We fell in love with the flemish in 1996 and it took us 2 years to find a breeder to get started. Personally, I don't think there is a more unique breed of rabbits. They are large and lovable.....the bunnies come out of the nestbox just as gentle and curious as can be. They remain very dosile until they have a reason no to be.
Outdoors vs Indoors -- Rabbits are very adaptive to their climate but it is my opinion that rabbits should not go from Indoors to outdoors or back and forth, especially in summer months. Heat is hard on rabbits and if they are use to air conditioning leave them in it.
Housing - Flemish outdoors need a large mostly solid bottom cage. We recommend 4'x8' for does and litters. Single males or females can get along in 3'x4' cages with at least 1/2 solid floors. The solid floors are harder to keep clean but help with back and hip development and provide a solid foundation for exercise. All wire floors tend to cause sore hocks and structural problems over time.
Feed -- I don't like "junk" food for my rabbits. We feed a good ration of 16% protein to our rabbits and provide prairie hay and straw for bedding. Best treat is black sunflower seeds or whole oats.
